Clinical Applications

Five Clinical Scenarios.
One Evidence-Based Solution.

HBOT addresses the full spectrum of complex wound care — across surgery, oncology, infection, and trauma. One system, multiple departments.

🦸
Diabetic Foot Ulcer
Wagner Grade 2+ ulcers refractory to 30 days of standard care. HBOT reduces amputation risk and accelerates wound closure in hypoxic tissue.
FDA Approved
🔬
Post-Surgical Complications
Wound dehiscence, failing skin flaps and graft failure linked to tissue hypoxia. HBOT restores oxygen delivery, supporting fibroblast activity and collagen synthesis.
Surgical Adjunct
☢️
Radiation Tissue Damage
Osteoradionecrosis, radiation cystitis and proctitis in oncology patients. HBOT reverses radiation-induced hypoxia and promotes neovascularisation in damaged tissue.
FDA Approved
🦠
Necrotising Infections
Necrotising fasciitis, clostridial myonecrosis, Fournier's gangrene. HBOT is bacteriostatic and bacteriocidal — potentiates antibiotics in hypoxic infected tissue.
Emergency Use
🩹
Crush Injuries & Grafts
Compartment syndrome, traumatic crush injuries, and failing skin grafts. HBOT reduces oedema, restores microvascular perfusion and salvages at-risk tissue.
Trauma Adjunct

🏥
Established in Malaysia Since 1996
Hyperbaric chambers have operated in Malaysian hospitals since 1996, initially at the Institute of Underwater and Hyperbaric Medicine. MOH Malaysia has established clinical protocols and regulatory pathways for HBOT deployment in both public and private hospitals.
📋
Government Procurement Justification
The MaHTAS evidence assessment and FDA-recognised indications provide the policy foundation for hospital procurement teams and KKM to justify HBOT capital expenditure in formal tender submissions.

Understanding HBOT

What Is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?

HBOT is the administration of 100% oxygen at pressures greater than 1.4 ATA — typically between 2.0 to 3.0 ATA in clinical settings — in a series of treatments.

Under hyperbaric conditions, oxygen dissolves directly into plasma — independent of haemoglobin — enabling delivery to hypoxic or compromised tissues unreachable by red blood cells alone. This is the mechanism that makes HBOT effective where conventional wound care fails.

2.0–3.0ATA Treatment Pressure
100%Pure Oxygen Delivered
14+FDA-Recognised Indications
90 minTypical Session Duration
⚗️
Enhanced Angiogenesis
HBOT stimulates vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), promoting new blood vessel formation. Fibroblast proliferation and collagen synthesis — the foundation of wound healing — are oxygen-dependent processes directly accelerated by HBOT.
🦠
Antimicrobial Action
HBOT is bacteriostatic and bacteriocidal in hypoxic tissue. It potentiates aminoglycosides and quinolones, increases intracellular leukocyte killing, and neutralises bacterial exotoxins.
💧
Oedema Reduction
Systemic vasoconstriction under HBOT decreases oedema without impairing oxygen delivery — improving nutrient diffusion through tissues and relieving pressure on surrounding vessels.

🇲🇾 MOH Malaysia / KKM Recognised

HBOT has been assessed by the Malaysian Health Technology Assessment Section (MaHTAS), Medical Development Division (2006). Chambers have operated in Malaysian hospitals since 1996. The MOH framework supports HBOT for approved indications in public and private facilities. Private sector indications have since broadened beyond the initial FDA list.
